This multisensory bundle is designed to support students improve their reading - all of the R-controlled vowels and compound words; along with writing skills development. Information is provided about concepts included in the bundle for the teachers, parents and other adults to have to help students. To provide a multisensory, explicit, and repetitive approach, there is a focus on the following skills: R Controlled Vowels ar, er, ir, or, ur For each r-controlled multisensory lesson, the teacher or adult needs to instruct the student (s) to identify the r-controlled vowel, sound, and provide a picture to highlight each sound. Compound Words Closed Hyphenated Open When two or more words joined together, the result is the creation of a compound word, with a new word meaning. There are three types of compound words: closed, hyphenated and open. Writing Skills Development “Writing Trigger Words” - support ideas/concept development It is critical to develop a student’s ability to decode, encode, reading fluently and comprehend, simultaneously focus on writing development, including sentence writing and paragraphs. This training packet is designed to provide examples of a multisensory lesson of the following: short vowels; consonants; consonant blends; consonant digraphs; long vowels; vowel diphthongs; compound words; schwa; inflected endings; prefixes; roots; suffixes; syllable types; spelling generalizations/rules and accent rules for participants use with their small and/or large classroom settings. Teachers will use multisensory strategies and better develop reading and writing skills, along with development of working memory; processing speed; vocabulary and writing skills. Each grade level includes at least three skill areas that can be used immediately in classes, small groups, or for tutoring sessions. The more students write the stronger writing skills become. Too often, when students are struggling readers, the emphasis is placed on decoding and encoding. However, students need to continually write, so the opportunities in this resource are fun. There is a Mr. Potato Head Activity that can be used for young to old. High school students love to create Mr. Potato Heads. If actual Mr. Potato heads are not available, then use the cut outs provided. This is a multisensory lesson for the vowel team: ay. The multisensory lesson includes the following is based on the principles of Orton Gillingham using multisensory strategies to better develop reading, writing and study skills. Included in this resource: Introductory multisensory lesson Basic word list of "ay" words. This page is for students who are not yet strong as decoders, or have yet to be exposed to vowel teams and vowel diphthongs. Next level - word list is for students with a higher decoding skills repertoire. Controlled reading of words with the vowel team "ay." Controlled reading is actually the time for reading fluency practice. 95% accuracy is the overall goal. Controlled reading is to practice skills, not for comprehension. It is beneficial for student to read 3-4 times to develop reading fluency. After that, the usefulness is diminished. Writing activity to develop sentence writing. This is a great activity to help students develop working memory, processing speed, both critical skills for reading fluency and comprehension. Please be aware that there are many students who do not like word searches because of the overload of neurological processes including memory, processing speed, visual memory. So please do not require this activity as a compulsory one. On the flip side of this discussion are the other students who absolutely love word searches. For these students, this is a great activity to internalize the word's spelling because each word requires a significant focus of the letter sounds and sequences.
